Morehead-Cain Scholarship Preliminary Application

William Greene

September 14, 2011

1.  While attending Clayton High School, I received the following honors and awards:  Senior Class President, Junior Class Vice-President, 2011 Graduation Marshall, Principal’s List Grades 9, 10 and 11, Junior Varsity Soccer Team Captain, Junior Varsity and Varsity Soccer Scholar Athlete Award Grades 9, 10 & 11, Junior Varsity and Varsity Baseball Scholar Athlete Award Grades 9, 10, & 11, Student of the Month Grade 11 (first year offered at CHS), Selected by Principal Eaves to Represent CHS at Driver Training For Peer Leadership Committee, National Honor Society Grades 10 and 11, National Honor Society Bronze Service Award For Community Hours Grade 11, and Invitation to People-to-People Ambassador Leadership Program Grades 9, 10 & 11.

2.  Lifeguard Certification, CPR Certification, UNC-W Soccer Camp, Campbell Soccer Camp, and NCSU Basketball Camp were additional ways that I participated in special programs while in high school.

3.  My hobbies are playing baseball, soccer and basketball, lifting weights, running, and learning new things.  I enjoy playing sports competitively and recreationally.  It is especially important and enjoyable to me to be physically conditioned.

4. The top five community activities in which I have invested my time and energy are noted in the order of importance to me: Two-week mission trip to Czech Republic to instruct foreign peers how to play baseball through games and clinics, earning the right to share the story of Christ to influence them for God, Appalachian Service Project repairing low income homes for families who could not physically or financially do so for themselves, sweet potato gleaning project with Horne Memorial Youth Group and delivered them to the hungry, Meals on Wheels delivering meals to home-bound elderly adults, and University of North Carolina Public Television Telethon Fundraising Event processing financial commitment donations on the computer, while answering telephones on live television.

5.  I have been physically active in the following four ways while at CHS:  Junior Varsity and Varsity Soccer and Baseball Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12 (soccer season has begun), organized recreational basketball and baseball, Krispy Kreme Challenge Road Race, and weightlifting & conditioning.

6.  Five other things that I have done that paint a picture of who I am are:  Consistently volunteering to tutor my peers in mathematics courses both during school hours and after school hours, rescued a drowning toddler, collaboratively designed and built 2011 Junior Class Homecoming float, assembled food packages at St. Ann’s Catholic Church for Stop Hunger Now Program, and Future Business Leaders of America card-making project for nursing home patients.

7.  During the summers of 2010 and 2011, I was employed as a Lifeguard for Fred Smith Company at Lionsgate Athletic Club.

8.  I believe that I have best demonstrated leadership serving as class officers (Senior President and Junior Vice President).  The circumstances that prompted my involvement were a desire to help guide students in accomplishing their goals for the school year.  I enjoyed representing my peers and feeling as though I had served them well.  I spent many hours designing posters and preparing a speech for each office for which I ran.  I learned to appreciate all of the efforts of previous leaders who served me in their roles of leadership.  I now realize the amount of work involved and have a greater appreciation for what goes into any situation where change is desired.  My peers have seemed pleased with my leadership efforts.  Instead of running for Vice President again, I thought it would be more challenging to be required to write and deliver an oral presentation at our 2012 graduation ceremony.  I have achieved this goal of higher leadership and look forward to the personal growth involved in representing my fellow classmates this year.

Thank you for the opportunity to submit my answers to your questions, and for your consideration of my representation of Clayton High School for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

Sincerely,

William Greene
